Moana Coffee

618 Hay Street Mall, Perth

Moana is a cutesy little cafe where you can sit up on the balcony and watch the people on Hay St go by. It is a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it cafe because it is just a mysterious door on a busy street. I love that about it. The hallway and staircase of the old building is art deco and super suave.

So I feel like some of the staff that work at Moana might be vegan because they are very knowledgable and understanding about vegan food. I was interested in the ‘Smashed sweet potato, feta and rocket bagel ($11)’ and they said that they could do it without the feta which was great. OMG the bagel was delightful – the spattering of seeds, onion and garlic on top is salty and savoury and delicious. The sweet potato mix was great, but the drizzle of caramelised balsamic really made the dish. Was a great balance of savoury and sweet.

I love a good dirty chai, but a lot of cafes use powder rather than the syrup… and the chai powder mix contains milk powder. The lovely girl on the coffee machine offered to brew me a fresh chai tea, and then turned that into a dirty chai coffee. It was different to what I was used to, but I just added a teensy bit of sugar and it was fantastic.

Will defo be coming back to Moana again. They make a veggie wrap with a homemade beetroot hummous that I am keen to try next time.
